In a blog early last week we looked at some clay masks. We will now begin planning out our masks. I asked that you take the time to look at clay masks on line and do some research into what you would like your mask to look like. Your mask can have a traditional look and it can be more contemporary. Think about the expression you want to convey. do you want it to seem scary or would you rather it be more peaceful?
Here are the steps we are going to take in planning out our masks.
1. You have fifteen minutes to go on line on your phone and look at a variety of masks. It will be especially helpful if you google "clay masks". During this time save masks that you want to use as reference material. It is required that you have at least five masks to look at.
2. On the paper provided you will begin sketching out various mask designs. You need to think about what the mask will look like from the front as well as from the side. A good sculpture is interesting from all views. You must draw up at least three different designs working from your reference masks that you have saved. You will not be allowed to begin working with your clay until you have investigated on paper three actual designs that you have spent some time working on.
3. After you have three designs completed, have me come talk to you about your designs, we will look at the strengths and weaknesses of each and you will then choose the best design. You will continue to improve it on paper. You are required to add elements other than clay to the finished mask. That will be planned again before you start working with your clay. The elements will be drawn in and you will elaborate about how you are using these on your finished mask. You will plan out how they will be attached and any special things you might need to complete this piece.
4. When your final design has been approved, you will begin creating the pattern pieces for it. You will draw it up to scale which means to actual size. Once your pattern pieces are complete, you may begin with your clay construction.

I have added a youtube video you are required to watch as HOMEWORK that shows a very simple clay mask construction technique.
