Today we will begin our slab construction unit. If you were absent yesterday, you need to go to yesterdays post and watch the YouTube video on slab construction.
Before you leave class today, it is your responsibility to bring your FINISHED GARGOYLE for its final grade. The post-fired finish must be successfully applied and it must have a shiny coat of Crystal Clear on it. Please do not take your sculpture home yet because I would like to display as many as possible. We do have a limited display area so unfortunately not all will be able to be on display.

Several students are able to work on the slab roller at a time. The clay can be laid across the width of the roller but should be kept at least six inches from each side. Place flattened cleaned matts underneath the clay before you roll it out. You will need to carefully measure what size piece you need for the mold you are working over before you cut it.
Remember before you apply the required texture to the slab, you need to rib into thoroughly on both sides. This makes the surface nice and smooth as well as strengthens the clay body. You want to make your clay as strong as you are able.

I believe you might be able to get three to four usable pieces from each rolling out of the clay. Once you have your piece of cut clay, go to your own desk area to work. Again, work on a clean mat. There are numerous textures and/or texture mats you can work from. Those students who bring in their own textures or create textures from the foam mats will receive extra credit.
Remember what you watched about constructing this piece. A foot is required for your pieces. It specifically addresses and shows you how to correctly make and adhere the foot to your piece.
If you are caught up and waiting for your turn at the slab roller, please go onto YouTube and look for other slab project tutorials. This will be helpful to you and give you ideas as well as information that will help you get better and better as a ceramics artist.
