| Students will be able to articulate verbally and in writing what negative and positive space is as it relates to the visual arts. Students will be able to articulate verbally and in writing why it is important to be aware of negative and positive space and because of this make conscious decisions about it when planning/designing a piece of art work. WHAT IS POSITIVE SPACE? WHAT IS NEGATIVE SPACE? Positive and negative space play an important role in determining the overall composition in a work of art. By understanding positive and negative space and applying your knowledge, you can become more successful in designing your compositions. What is Positive and Negative Space? Simply put, positive space is best described as the areas in a work of art that are the subjects, or areas of interest. Negative space is area around the subjects, or areas of interest. As you will see there are several ways you can work with the idea of positive and negative space. Some are relatively simple and some are more complex. Take a piece of drawing paper. Find an object in this room that will work if you draw only the negative space. For example, a stool can work. There are lots of other choices. Use AT LEAST 2/3's of the surface of your paper for the drawing. Draw only the negative space around and inside the object. This should be done with care and thoughtful mark making. Good craftsmanship is important! |
