We discussed what negative and positive space is earlier last week. If you missed that day, please review this information in the blog. When creating a piece of work it is important to be aware of both what you are drawing and the shapes created in the spaces around and in between your drawing. This can add to the strength of your final piece.
I observed as students were working on a negative space study of a stool that many were having a hard time with the concept of simply drawing the negative space. I certainly don't want to rush this process so I feel it is important that I slow down a little and make sure all student have a good understanding of the relationship between negative and positive space.
Today we will do a relatively simple project that will be finished in this class period. We are going to work using scissors and will cut out shapes to create both the positive and negative images of each shape. I would like for students to begin to be able to visualize negative and positive space much like silhouettes in front of a blank canvas. It helps to do this using two values that contrast highly against one another, such as black and white.

We will do the exercise from this site to help you better understand the relationship between negative and positive space. You need to make a minimum of 10-12 cut shapes. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOUR VARY YOUR SHAPES AND SIZES.
You will be assessed on your craftsmanship as well as the required elements This means I will score you on the neatness in which you do this project. For example:
Are your cut lines sharp and crisp looking?
Did you complete ten to twelve cuts shapes?
Did you neatly and completely glue them in place?
Are your shapes varied in both shape and size?
